Knowledge Precedes Efficienncy

The Internet makes searching for a roommate, room, or house a cinch compared to the days of newspapers, referral services, or word of mouth. While it's true that the Internet can be a more efficient tool for soemone looking to rent, it can also prove to be an unproductive method for finding your own space if you do not know exactly where to go. Anyone who has searched the Internet for information with Google or any popular search engine knows that it can take some time to sift through the results in order to identify material that is relelvent and useful. A broad topic such as rentals makes the probability of wasting time very likely which in turn can lead to frustration and perhaps even defeat. To support my hunch about blindly searching out sources for rentals, I used Google to search for the phrases, "roommate" and "rooms for rent," along with my city and another large California city. Neither search term yielded usedful results within the first 12 and 14 items respectively, nor did all of those links actually have a connection to terms I was hoping to locate.

Craigslist.com is the answer to your classified ad needs for rentals and much, much more. If you somehow have not visited the site, then you should make it a point to do so. The site began in the San Francisco Bay Area (covering SF and surrounding areas and cities such as, but not limited to Berkeley, San Jose, Oakland, and Palo Alto. Consequently, the SF Bay Area is the default homepage from which you must select an alternate city or country to search for classified ads. Many larger metropolitan areas are further separated into districts which is especially convenient when searching for housing.

The section titled, "Housing" is naturally where you will find rooms, apartments, or houses for rent. After clicking the "Apts/housing" link you can begin to narrow your focus and find a place that fits all of your needs. Craigslist.com offers filters including, but not limited to, "dogs," "max" price range, or "image only" listings for the visual types. Once you set your requirements, the site provides results that include only relevant ads. I only look at ads with photos because I have certain criteria for where I live. With today's gas prices, it's wise to avoid wasted trips to check out a place described as charming but is actually a dump. Newspaper ads generally do not supply the same information that is fairly standard for Craigslist.com's user base, and this is likely why the rental section grows smaller and smaller in print but is expanding online.

Great hub, nice job. Thanks. I like craigslist, I use it mainly for looking at freelance writing jobs. I volunteer at a community center in my area and the housing program is being cut. So alternative housing will be necessary for the growing number of displaced people. Thanks for your hub.
